ELMIRA - Corning ran into a buzzsaw named Bella Reese in an 8-1 loss on Tuesday in Elmira.

Reese scattered five hits, gave up one earned run and had three strikeouts in a complete game effort for the Express on the mound.

At the plate, she had two hits including a double and two RBIs.

Mariah Graham went 3 for 3 and had three RBIs for Elmira.

Corning scored one run in the top of the first, but Elmira responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Express scored three in the third inning and added four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

“I thought we strung our hits together and had timely hitting, that’s what we need to do to score runs,” Elmira head coach Jeff Edwards said.

Laura Bennett took the loss in the circle for the Hawks, striking out four and allowing seven hits over six innings.

Sadie Sharkey went 2 for 4 to lead Corning.

Elmira improves to 8-5 with the win and will travel to Maine-Endwell today at 5 p.m., while Corning (6-8) will host Binghamton at 5 p.m. today.
