HORSEHEADS - The Horseheads boys golf team won the Section IV Class A title Monday at par 71 Soaring Eagles Golf Course with a team score of 392.

Vestal finished second with a team score of 404 followed by Corning (414), Union-Endicott (418), Maine-Endwell (445), Binghamton (451) Ithaca (452) and Elmira (501).

The Blue Raiders had four of the top nine scores and were led by Seth Conway with a 76. Dan Huten and Matt Printup posted 78’s, Zach Locke carded a 79 and Nick Murray had an 80.

“I thought they did an excellent job today,” Horseheads head coach Ed Browning said. “If you’re able to drop an 85 [the highest individual team score], you’re going to be able to win a lot of tournaments. My hats off are to them. The championship is awesome and I’m happy for those boys.”

For Huten, the title was the perfect send off for him as a senior.

“It was well deserved after a hard fought season,” said Huten. “Undefeated, as of right now. Being on the team for six years, it was well deserved on the way out.”

Horseheads improves to 14-0 in all competitions after having its undefeated streak stopped in the same tournament last year, finishing runner up to Vestal. The Blue Raiders will have a chance to cap off their undefeated regular season today with a match against Binghamton.

Coach Ed Browning and his players made it a primary objective to come back and win the title this season.

“The kids had that as one of their goals,” said Browning. “It’s been Vestal and us for years. We’ll see them again in the STAC Championships and I would not discount Corning, they can really play."

Tyler Thomas was the overall medalist of the tournament for Corning, firing a 73 as the Hawks finished third.

“Individually I thought I played well,” said Thomas. “Putted real well, and my irons were solid all day. Overall, I thought we played pretty well as a team.”

Also for Corning, Ben Tubbs shot an 82, followed by Jairam Hathwar (83), Drew Beall (87) and Carson Crane (88).

Jacob Barnes shot a 78 and was a medalist for the Elmira Express.

Teams will compete in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championship match Tuesday Oct, 9 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, N.Y.
