CORNING - Trailing 5-4 at halftime, Corning netted six unanswered goals to earn a 10-6 win over Horseheads and a Southern Tier Athletic Conference lacrosse matchup Friday.

"We talked about a little more intensity, locking things down on the defensive end and changing up a couple of different matchups," Corning head coach Chris Hogue said. "Offensively, we talked about finishing, we had a lot of shots, but we had more turnovers than we had in the past. We changed up the offensive formation up a little bit to get people in better spots to score."

Quinn Bowler led the Hawks with five goals including three in the second half and the go-ahead goal which put Corning up 6-5 with 7:57 left in the third quarter.

"He's doing a nice job of finishing right now," said Hogue. "He throws that fake and he's playing really confident and we love to see that."

Seth Grottenthaler tied the score out of halftime four minutes into the third quarter on an assist from Brendyn Hogue. Hogue finished with a goal and three assists.

Cam Kenefic added a goal in the fourth quarter for Corning.

Gavin Elston led the Blue Raiders with four goals including two goals in the first half and a rocket shot from 13-yards out that gave Horseheads a halftime lead. Nate Hamm and Tom O'Mara added single goals for Horseheads.

Grottenthaler and Bowler scored Corning's first two goals as the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 first quarter lead three minutes into the game.

Corning outshot Horseheads 45-18 in the contest and Blue Raider Goalie Lucas Lawas had 18 saves. Corning goalie Elon Friends stopped four shots.

The Hawks improve to 3-1 with the win and will travel to Johnson City at 5 p.m. Tuesday while Horseheads will host Elmira Tuesday at 5 p.m.
