GENSEO - Hammondsport fought off elimination and prevailed against Pavilion in five sets Friday to capture the Section V Class D3 title Friday night for the second time in as many years.

"It feels great for the team because it's a back to back win for us," Hammondsport head coach Erica Webster said. "It's a wonderful thing,"

The Lakers won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20, but Pavilion responded to win the next two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-22.

Webster had a word of advice for her team heading into the final set.

"That it wasn't just about who wanted the match and who wanted the title, because both teams wanted the title," said Webster. "It's going to come down to who can go out there and execute with the least amount of mistakes to take it home."

Facing elimination down 24-20 in the deciding set, Erica Hilligus served six-straight points for the Lakers to power them to the title.

"With each point that they won, you could just see the determination and the fact that they believed in themselves coming back. We lost our confidence in the two sets we lost," said Webster.

Julia Bennett had 13 kills followed by Hilligus with 11.

Hammondsport will play Tuesday against Section V Division I opponent Bloomfield in the first crossover match at 5:30 p.m. in Canandaigua.

The Lakers split with Bloomfield 1-1 during the regular season.

Brianna Pratt and Angela Gonzo were named to the section V class D3 all star team and Bennett was named MVP.

"I think that every player that stepped on the court last night at some point had all-star moments," said Webster. "My setter Brianna Pratt was able to put sets up for my attackers consistently. Angela Gonzo was able to overcome an injury and was clutch in the last few points. Julia Bennett was consistent in the front row getting blocks as well as putting the ball down She was definitely our motivator in the front row with consistency."
