PLATTSBURGH - Local runners fared well at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet in Plattsburgh Saturday with runners receiving state medals for placing in the top 20.
The Corning girls finished fourth as a team in Class A after a sixth place projection with a team score of 139.
“The girls ran great, I don’t think we’ve ever come as a girls team and finish higher than projected,” Corning head coach Ray Lawson said. “They ran very well here. Especially our pack of girls 3-6, they ran especially well. That was all of their best races of the season.”
Faithe Ketchum led the Hawks with a 35th place finish (17:50.7) followed by Claire Mason (50th; 18:16.0), Katie Hale (65th; 18:31.9), Alicia Lawson (69th; 18:36.3), Chloe Freeland (71st; 18:39.2), Lydia Keys (80th; 19:05.1) and Angelea Collins (102nd; 20:16.1).
Also for the Class A girls, Samantha Woodworth finished 48th (18:03.0) and Laura Demichele placed 59th in 18:27.8 for Horseheads and Lizzie Ostrander took 54th for Elmira in 18:23.3.
Torrey Jacobson-Evans led the Corning boys with an 11th place finish in 14:56.7. Jacobson-Evans received a state medal for finishing in the top-20.
“The race was competitive,” said Lawson. “Torrey had best race of the season. It was a good way to close out his regular season.”
Matthew Hong took 58th (15:43.5) and Matthew Gensel was 65th (15:48.0).
Also in Class A, Jason Matthewson finished 31st for Elmira (15:16.6) and Nasir King was 107th (17:14.5).
In Class C, the Watkins Glen boys finished seventh as a team and were led by Gabe Planty’s 6th place finish (15:00) followed by Sam Thorsland (48th; 16:17.6), Max Evans (68th; 16:36.3), Steven Gublo (119th; 17:48.1), Benjamin Swinnerto (120th; 17:48.2), Lawrence Majors (128th; 18:25.5) and Elliott Holland (129th; 18:33.6).
The Addison boys finished 11th as a team. Ronnie Dailey had an 80th place finish in 16:46.4, Hayden Mills took 83rd (16:47.6), Kristopher Thompson was 102nd (17:18.2), Daniel Ryhal finished 103rd (17:18.5), Noah Green took 107th (17:27.3), Trent Makowiec was 112th (17:31.7) and Bobby Horton placed 132nd (19:17.3).
On the girls side of Class C, Addison placed ninth as a team. Faith Skowvron led the Knights with a 31st place finish with a time of 18:31.9 followed by Isabella Painter (67th; 19:32.9), Vanessa Ryhal (87th; 20:29.1), Anna Carlineo (95th; 20:45.3), Sarah Lyons (98th; 20:50.4) and Olivia Thompson (127th; 23:58.5).
In the Class D boys race, Steven Gough of Elmira Notre Dame led all local finishers with a 15th place finish in 15:48.0 while Thomas Kressly of Hammondsport took 17th (15:55.6). Scott Herlan (61st; 17:22.6) and Derek Simpson (88th; 18:18.0) also placed for the Crusaders.
In the girls race, Riley Soehnlein finished 33rd for Elmira Notre Dame in 19:20.8, Piper Young was 34th (19:22.4) and Alyssa Walker took 41st (19:49.1).
