CORNING – Local free throw shooters punched their ticket to regionals following the Knights of Columbus District 89 finals - held at All Saints Academy.


Winners will head to the Finger Lakes regional competition, slated for March 8 at McQuaid Jesuit High School. Winners there will move on to the New York State finals to be held at West Point Military Academy.


The event consists of contestants attempting 25 free throws.


District 89 winners included Hornell’s Lillian Hoyt in the 13-year-old girls division; 12-year-olds Selena Maldonado (Hornell) and Josiah Clark (Addison); 11-year-olds Grace Groves (Hornell) and Nicholas Ferratella III (Corning); and Christopher O’Brien (9, Big Flats).


The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with nearly two million members donating over 76 million volunteer hours and $185 million to charitable causes.


All children ages nine to 14 are eligible to participate each year in the local, council-level qualifying events for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, conducted every January.
