Family mediation

The Center of Dispute Settlement is offering the alternative of mediation. The advantages are that the mediation is free to those 21 and younger, it is confidential, a neutral person helps to consider all options, it results in better communication between family members, it helps maintain control over family problems, and everybody has a chance to tell their side of the story. Mediation is an alternative to filing PINS. The service is available to any Steuben County resident or youth over the age of seven years old.

Wine Country Toastmasters

Help & support for homeschoolers

Bath Area LEAH (Loving at Education at Home,) is a statewide, christian, non-denominational organization consisting of approximately 3,500 families. They welcome all to their monthly pot luck dinners, usually the last Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God Church basement, with the next informational meeting on Nov. 24. ASSE International Student Exchange Program

ASSE International Student Exchange Program is seeking local host families for boys and girls from a variety of countries around the world. These students are 15-18 years of age, and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester. These personable and academically select exchange students have good English, are bright, curious and anxious to learn about the USA by living as part of your family, attending high school and sharing their own culture and language with you.

The exchange students arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or sememster. Each ASSE student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to bear his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

The students are well screened and qualified by ASSE. Families may select the youngster of their choice from extensive student applications, family photos and biographical essays.

2010 Calendars benefit ALS

Retired Campbell-Savona teachers have their 2010 calendars ready to sell. Proceeds will benefit ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Calendars feature art work by: Anne Drake, Susan Goodrich, Kathy McDonald, Phyllis Straulka, Jane Kaszczynec and Karen Flint. Three sizes are available. Money donated to ALS will be made in Karen Flint's name. Karen was diagnosed with ALS in 2006 and retired from Campbell-Savona School District as an art teacher.

Wine Country Seniors

Wine Country Seniors invite all area people age 60 and over to our regular Monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of each month, downstairs in the Methodist Church 35 Lake Street. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8. The meeting will be their Thanksgiving Dinner and everyone is to bring non-perishable food items for the Hammondsport Food Pantry. • Steuben County Health Care Facility needs volunteers in the gift shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a card club director to play cards with the residents.

• Steuben County Historian would love to have clerical assistance making copies, checking newspapers, filing and sorting important historical information.

• Volunteers are needed as substitute drivers to deliver meals to the homebound elderly.

• Bath Private Nursery needs a volunteer nursery school aide to read and tell stories to pre-schoolers any morning Monday through Friday.

• American Red Cross needs a volunteer to assist at Spring Meadows every third Thursday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

• Ira Davenport/Taylor Health Care needs several volunteers to visit with residents, assist with transporting patients in-house, and in the Gift Shop.

55 Alive Driving course

AARP and the St. James Mercy Health System are teaming up to offer the 55 Alive Mature Driving course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be held from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 and Wednesday, Nov. 18 in the hospital's Memorial Conference Room.

Participants who complete the eight hour classroom refresher course may receive ten percent discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their license. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Seating is limited.

H-port Christmas in the Park sponsors needed

Sponsors are need for the Hammondsport 33rd Annual Christmas in the Park event to be held from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 in the Hammondsport Village Square. While any help is appreciated, a contributionof $100 or more will get a business listed on “Santa's List.” The list will show up in any advertising and press releases as well as a special larger-than-life size decoration depicting Santa and his list on display in the square. Corning Area Community Concert Band

The Corning Area Community Concert Band will present its annual Fall Scholarship Concert at 3 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Corning Museum of Glass auditorium. Admission is free. Free-will donations will be accepted for the Scholarship Fund. A reception will follow the concert to celebrate the 35th year of the band. Steuben County has been declared eligible for Farm Service Agency (FSA), formerly Farmers Home Administration, disaster emergency loan assistance effective Oct. 19, 2009 due to damages and losses caused by excessive rain and hail which occurred May 1, 2009 and continuing. Family farmers who have suffered the losses of at least 30 percent of their production due to the excessive rain and hail may be eligible for FSA loans. Proceeds from crop insurance and any FSA programs are taken into account when determining eligibility for production losses. Losses must be supported with documented records. Under the FSA Emergency Loan Programs farmers may be eligible for production loss loans of up to 100 percent of their actual losses, or the operating loan amount needed to continue in business, or a maximum principal balance outstanding of $500,000, whichever is less. Farmers must be unable to obtain credit from private commercial lenders. The interest rate on Emergency Loans is 3.75 percent.

The annual Community Thanksgiving Worship Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty Street, Bath. The preacher will be Deacon Dave LaFortune, St. Mary', Church, Bath. Combined voice and bell choirs will provide the music. A free-will offering will be taken for the Bath Ministers' Assn. Itinerant Fund which helps travelers who are stranded in Bath. A time of remembrance will allow people to name those for whom they are thankful. This ecumenical service is open to all residents of the area.

'The Shack' book discussion

A one-time discussion of the bestselling book THE SHACK (Wm. Paul Young) will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty Street, Bath. Driver safety course

The AARP will hold Driver Safety Course from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 and Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Lakeview I in Bath. The driver safety course is a refresher course for those aged 50 and over. It is co-sponsored by AARP and the Steuben County Office for the Aging. The training consists of two four hour classroom sessions taught by a trained instructor. At these sessions, fundamental driving skills are reinforced through the use of slides, lectures and group discussions.

Pre-registration is required. The registration fee per course is $12 per person for AARP members and $14 per person for non-members. New York State law requires insurance companies to reduce liability insurance rates up to ten percent for individuals successfully completing the course.

Bath CSD info./discussion session

The Bath CSD and Steuben County need the communities input on what is currently working and what needs improvement when accessing mental health and counseling services. An information and discussion will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the VEW library.

Kiwanis Youth Basketball registrations

Registrations for the 2010 Kiwanis Youth Basketball program will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 and Thursday, Nov. 19 in the high school gym entrance lobby. The program is for boys and girls in grades 2-6, or at least seven years old by Dec. 1.

Tools to help children

Ray Foody, Ph.D. will facilitate a workshop on behavior management strategies to use at home. Come and learn how to find the causes of child behaviors and develop a plan that works for the family. The workshop will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the VEW Library. Three gas cards will be raffled off to participants. Child care will be provided for the workshop.
