Federal charges are pending against a Tioga, Pa., man was arrested Monday at the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport after a loaded gun and two knives were allegedly found in his carry-on luggage.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, Michael D. Rinehart, 53, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Investigators said the weapons were discovered when Rinehart attempted to pass through security early Monday morning. The Transportation Security Administration held the man and contacted the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, which took the man into custody on state charges.

According to authorities, the Rinehart was carrying a .38-caliber revolver with five rounds of ammunition, a 9-inch knife and a utility knife.

Rinehart was preparing to board a Detroit-bound flight, according to the TSA. His final destination was not known.

He was released after posting $100,000 cash bail.

This year, the TSA has confiscated more than 1,100 firearms at airport security checkpoints nationwide.

This gun was found in Rinehart’s carry-on luggage as he attempted to pass security and board a flight to Detroit.
