Food Bank receives $13K to expand mobile program

Staff reports

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier has received a $13,000 grant to expand its mobile food pantry program in Steuben and Chemung counties.

The funds were provided by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes.

The mobile food pantries are two 35-foot trucks that deliver fresh produce, dairy products and other groceries to distribution sites in Southern Tier communities. Each distribution delivers up to 15,000 pounds of food to 200 or 250 families, according to the Food Bank.

Last year, the program delivered more than 2.5 million pounds of food, including 746,087 pounds of produce, at 472 distributions.

The Community Foundation is described as “a permanent source of charitable funds backed by a wide variety of donors committed to the social and economic health of the southern Finger Lakes.”
