Let food stamps help you do your work

Staff reports

To the Editor:

Are you working but still finding it difficult to manage your monthly bills, particularly with increased heating costs at this time of year? If so, you may be eligible for food stamp benefits. Currently, the Food Stamp Program helps to put food on the table for over 2.4 million New Yorkers each month, including working families. Food stamps can help your family buy the nutritious foods needed to stay strong and healthy, as well as stretch your monthly budget.

The Food Stamp Program is a federally funded entitlement program, similar to social security.

There is no state or local contribution toward the costs of benefits. In fact, every dollar spent in food stamps at your local grocery store generates a $1.84 in economic revenue for your community.

Last year, the Food Stamp Program brought in $2.5 billion in federal revenues to New York State’s struggling economy and local businesses. By accessing and utilizing the Food Stamp Program, both your family and community benefits!

Recent changes in the program make it even easier for working families to apply, including the possibility of applying online.

For more information about the Food Stamp Program, or for a free and confidential prescreening to find out if you may be eligible, please contact the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) at: Catholic Charities of Steuben (800) 724-2841.
